About

Fakenham Town Band is one of the few brass bands in East Anglia with the remarkable distinction of spanning three centuries of music-making. Established in 1881 the band has grown into a proud and enduring institution at the heart of the community.

Over the years, Fakenham Town Band has weathered many challenges, including two world wars, yet it has continued to thrive thanks to the dedication, resilience, and passion of its members. Our unwavering commitment has not only ensured the band’s survival but has also enabled it to achieve a high standard of musical excellence, delighting audiences and performers alike.

Today, the band remains as active and popular as ever, performing up to 30 engagements each year. Our varied programme ranges from lively garden fetes to full-scale concerts, bringing music to a wide range of audiences and continuing a rich tradition that has endured for well over a century.

Cornet

The cornet is closely related to the trumpet but differs in several key aspects. Its tubing is more tightly wrapped and has a conical bore, which produces a warmer, mellower sound compared to the trumpet’s brighter tone

Flugel

The flugelhorn features a wider, highly conical bore compared to the cornet, which has a slightly more cylindrical profile. It typically comes with three piston valves and a larger, flared bell that contributes to its soft, velvety sound

Tenor Horn

The tenor horn is a conical-bore brass instrument. It has a warm, lyrical sound that blends smoothly with other mid-voice instruments like euphoniums and cornets. The standard tenor horn has three valves and a wide, gently flared bell that accentuates its mellow timbre. It is smaller than a euphonium but larger than a cornet, occupying a middle register that complements both soprano and bass instruments

Baritone

The baritone horn has a cylindrical bore to give it a brighter sound than the conical euphonium, allowing it to complement the ensemble without overpowering it It also contributes to the harmonic texture and warmth of the ensemble, rarely serving as a solo instrument but effectively filling in harmonies between the more brash trombones and the mellow euphoniums

Euphonium

The euphonium frequently carries the melodic line, offering rich harmonic support and depth to the ensemble’s sound. Its conical bore produces a mellow, smooth tone, which makes it ideal for lyrical passages, legato lines, and expressive solos. The euphonium functions both as a harmonic foundation alongside tubas and as a soloistic voice

Trombone

Trombones play a central and versatile role in British brass bands, adding both melodic leadership and harmonic support. Their historical significance, unique slide mechanism, and integration into the standardized UK brass band instrumentation make them indispensable to the ensemble’s distinctive sound

Tuba

The tuba provides the bassline that supports and stabilizes the harmonic and rhythmic structure of a brass band. In UK brass bands, the tuba section usually includes multiple players: two Eb tubas and two BBb tubas, with the Eb instruments often playing higher bass lines while BBb tubas reinforce the lowest pitches. The tuba's deep, rich tones are crucial for achieving the traditional British brass band sound

Percussion

Drums: snare, bass, tom-toms, timpani
